How to identify Aladdin hanging lamps and their hangers
There are many fine print and on-line references for Aladdin lamps sold in the Untied States but they largely ignore or only briefly mention in passing the Aladdin hanging lamps. This web page is an attempt to fill in this gap and cover every hanging lamp manufactured by Aladdin and offered for sale in the United States and Canada. Aladdin England used the American hanger designs. Aladdin Australia uses their own N918 hanger design for 1221, for later model 12 hanging lamps and 1620 for model 16 hanging lamps, then in the 1950s started using the American tilt frame hangers, likely imported from England.
Model 1 through 4 hanging lamps lamps (other hangers were optional for models 3 & 4 lamps)
Note: See my web page covering heat bells (smoke bells) for information covering which heat bell goes with which lamp
The first lamp hangers used by Aladdin for their model 1 through 4 hanging lamps were "off the shelf" hangers used by Plume and Atwood (P&A) for their Royal hanging lamps since the late 1800s. The Mantle Lamp Company (Aladdin) simply bought what P&A was selling at the time and resold them with their own font lamps. The changes to the harps were changes P&A made to their harps for the Royal hanging lamps.

Model 1 though 4 lamps were sold with or without a 14 inch shade. The shade is #201 opal glass.
Note: There are newer opel dome shades with a steeper side profile not used by Aladdin.
|
First were the model 103 (no shade) and 104 (with dome shade). The font lamp was catalogue # 102. By 1911 The Mantle Lamp Company (Aladdin) revised their their product designation. The basic font lamp remained 102 while the hanging lamp without shade became 102A, and with the 14 inch dome shade became 102B. The harp crown ring was also offered as a stand alone product for people who wanted to add a shade to their already purchased 102A hanging lamp. During Aladdin models 1 through 4 production the harp and crown ring remained the same but the bottom ring that held the font underwent changes. The method for opening up the bottom ring changed approximately between Aladdin model 1 and later models. The embossing on the bottom ring was eliminated approximately between Aladdin model 3 and 4 production. This means model 1 hangers are unique. model 2 and 3 hangers are the same and the model 4 hanger is unique.

The model 5 and early 6 hanging lamps are identical with the exception of the harp rod diameter. Diagnostic of the Aladdin model 5 hanger is a 3/16th inch diameter harp rod. The model 6 hanger of the same style has a 1/4 inch diameter harp rod.
The model 23 version is made in England by Sherwood Ltd. It was designed by Kennith Moore in 1977 and sold by Ken Moore Designs in Canoga Park, California. There was only a single production run of 500 of these lamps sold by Ken before he retired from the business. Later the tooling was purchased by The American lamp supply. Eventually this lamp became the model 23 Aladdin Deluxe hanging lamp. The hanging frame is made entirely out of brass and unlike the model 5 and early model 6 steel hangers are non magnetic. The quick definitive feature is the bottom hoop attachment to the harp. It uses the same attachment as the late model 6 bottom hoop and spherical nuts instead of hex nuts. |

IMPORTANT NOTE: A small number of these hangers and shades were reproduced by Ken Moore of Kenneth Moore Designs in Canoga Park, California in 1977. Catalogue number K-61A. Ken's lamps used Aladdin model 23 burners. The first (only?) production run was 100 lamps. These lamps were made in England by Sherwood Ltd. His font would later become the Aladdin model 23 Deluxe font lamp. Note: Keen Moore was a neighbor for about 10 years and my early mentor. He provided documentation about his lamps

In 1929 Aladdin introduced the model 12 lamp and a new basket font attachment for the new model 12 floor, hanging and wall lamps. The basket attachment system proved unpopular and was soon replaced with simpler mounting systems.

The basket fit to the bottom of the burner and was sandwiched in
between the font and the burner base.

A simpler less expensive to manufacture tilt frame hanger replaced the complicated model 12 basket hanging system. The tilt frame hanger was introduced in 1933 for both model 12 and model B hanging lamps. The tilt frame lamps were available with the #716 white glass shade, a choice of 14 inch parchment shades, or without a shade.

The frame for model B hanging lamps was cost reduced at the end of WWII and the glass shade option was eliminated. The frame stayed in production until the Aladdin lamp tooling was destroyed during the winter 1954-55 flood. Since part of the tooling was used to create the aluminum follow-on hanger it is assumed that the hanger tooling was located elsewhere and survived the flood. Lamps sold with this harp were available both with and without a 14 inch parchment shade. Correct fonts are Alacite, and either nickel or Bronze metal font lamps. This would be the correct hanger for any font lamp with a Nashville model B burner.

"Aladdin"
|
After the flood of winter 1954-55 washed away all the Aladdin font and burner tooling, Aladdin designed and manufactured Aluminum model C Nashville lamps and introduced a cost reduced aluminum lamp hanger. This aluminum hanger was made as cheaply as possible. Tooling for the previous hanger was used to produce the smoke bell hanger and the shade holder. The model C version parts were stamped from aluminum instead of steel. This hanger stayed in production through 1981.

The hanger is provided with an off the shelf "S" hook to hold the top of the harp and smoke bell hanger, The smoke bell hanger is not attached to the harp.
The small hole in the centre of the smoke bell hanger had been used to pass the rivet the held the top two halves of the previous model hanger together.
This indicates that Aladdin's lamp hanger manufacturing tooling was in a different location from the tooling to manufacture the lamps and burner.

Model 23 tilt frame hanging lamps 1984 by American Lamp Supply through present day
 |
See the model B tilt frame for frame details
The model B tilt frame lamp was reproduced in solid brass by The American lamp Supply in 1984 (catalogues # 210R) and became an Aladdin product on 5 April 1999 when The American Lamp Supply merged with Aladdin and has been the standard Aladdin hanging lamp frame ever since. The Aladdin 716 milk glass shade was also reproduced for use with the new tilt frame hanger. Note that these glass shades were discontinued in 2024 and only parchment shades were available. The quick diagnostic between the early tilt frame hanger and this new one is that the early one was made of steel & plated. The new one is brass so is not magnetic. Frame alone is catalogue # H715.

Aladdin model 23 hanging lamp Catalog BH23-303 1992 - 2022

There were two Hong Kong manufactured model 23 fonts used. One is the common version that only had the bottom stem attachment for a table lamp. The other had a pedestal foot smaller but similar to the UK model 23 font lamp that was part of the lower font stamping. I suspect this second version was only sold in the UK to mimic the UK made font lamp.

The model 23 deluxe hanging frame can be easily distinguished from the model 5 & 6 versions by use of a magnet. The model 23 version is made entirely out of brass and unlike the model 5 and early model 6 steel hangers is non magnetic. The quick definitive feature is the bottom hoop attachment to the harp. It uses the same attachment as the late model 6 bottom hoop and spherical nuts instead of hex nuts.
This lamp has a has an interesting history and is based on the Aladdin model 5 hanging lamp. It was designed by Ken Moore of Ken Moore Designs in 1978 and manufactured by Sherwood Ltd in England. There was only a single production run of 500 of these lamps sold by Ken before he retired from the business. In 1991 Ken sold the tooling to Tom Teeter of The American Lamp Supply. 500 were manufactured and sold by The American Lamp Supply company, catalog 115R (oil) and E115R Aladdin electric burner). 500 was the minimum quantity order that Sherwood would accept. Tom made a second order of 500 and for unknown reasons could not afford to pay for the order. Tom "gave" the second order along with ownership of the tooling to Aladdin who took on the cost of the second order in 1995. The American lamp Supply company continued to sell the first order of 500. In 1997 Aladdin introduced their New brass Deluxe Hanging lamp BH210 (BHE210 with electric burner). Frame catalogue # 115-02
